Wanted: People with Disabilities who want to take
 part in an accessible Internet

 Dear Madam
 Dear Sir

ISdAC is a European organisation officially
founded in 1998 by people with disabilities for
people with disabilities. Our aim is to
participate actively in building a fully
 accessible Information Society for all.

Within the framework of the projects our
organisation is associated with, we are looking
for disabled people with (basic) internet
 experience. Your contribution consists
of testing two web environments on their
 accessibility and functionality: Webforum (online
 collaborative platform) and Oncross (e-shop
 generator). Both tests include
two questionnaires and one standard task + one
 general questionnaire.

If you are interested in an accessible Internet
for all and you can make some time for these
tests, we would enjoy it if you want to cooperate.

The server is online night and day, so you can
decide yourself when to do it. You can also
spread your work in different sessions. These
tests take no longer than 6-8 hours in total for
each and a lump sum cost reimbursement (75 EUR
 for each test) is foreseen.

If you are interested or you want more
information, please contact Xavier Du Chateau,
Xavier@isdac.org. Don't hesitate and pass this
information to other interested disabled people.
If you want some more information about
our organisation and our projects, please take a
 look at www.isdac.org.

 With regards

I'm disabled & not able to work out of the home. Nor

I'm looking for grants that would help me get a home

Although, I'm open to ideas. I do have a computer.
However, I have a Macintosh & I need resources to pay
 for training
I'm also looking for grant money to be able to get
 medical/dental care, as I don't have insurance.
 I live in Colorado, USA.

I can't send email. I would like to know if I
could write for anAurora. I am a disabled woman.
 Here's a sample of my writing. It's about a
syndrome I inherited from my father.

Waardenburg syndrome. Leading Cause of Genetic
 Deafness
I have Waardenburg syndrome. My article is
about this rare disorder that also consists of
different colored eyes, grey hair from birth and
 other anomilies.
This is a rather personal article since I have
 Waardenburg Syndrome.
Well you may be asking yourself,
what in the world is Waardenburg and am I
spelling it right. Yes I am.
It was named after a Dutch ophthmalologisit and
 many Dutch names have a
 double A in them.
 What is most important about
this genetic disorder is it is one of the top
 major reasons for congenital
hereditary hearing loss.Actually there are three
kinds of WS. My dad and I have WSII. The most
common type is WS I. It is
characterized by eyes of different colors, eyes
 wide apart. Technically
its a medical canthal displacement. What this
 basically means is that the
space between the inner corners of the eyes is
 slightly wider than most
people. There is also premature graying of the
 hair. At times starting
from birth! The incidence of hearing loss is
about twenty five percentIn WSII, the kind I
 inherited
the difference is the eyes are normally spaced
 apart. The percentage of
people with WSII who are deaf because of the
condition is up to sixty percent.
In both forms the nose is small, usually
upturned. Lips are full and rosebud shaped.
It is also the only time where blue eyes are
dominant. About ninty-five percent of persons
 with
WS have blue eyes. It doesn't matter if they are
 Negro, Caucausion, Oriental,
etc, practically everyone with the syndrome has
 blue eyes. Or at least
eye is blue In my father's family of eight
brothers and sisters, six had blue eyes. It is I
 think
 interesting
to note that WSI is believed to be caused by the
PAX3 gene on I think the
second chromosome. This was discovered about five
 years ago and the geneticists
who discovered this received the Nobel prize.
 Another note of interest
and unfortunately a rather negative one is that
the gene for WSI is the
only gene at least so far discovered that also
 causes an entirely different
condition. In this case a form of cancer called a
 rabdhosarcoma. A tumor
of the connective tissue The hearing defect is
of the senseoneural type and hearing aids do
 help.
By the way, my father is a retired musician.
 An exclllent site and organization
to check out for more information and support for
 this and most other rare
disorders is the National Organization for Rare
 Disorders NORDwww.rarediseases.org.
For more information, I recommend doing a search
on a major search engine or a metasearch for
 Waardenburg Syndrome. HealthlinkUSA has an
 excellent page on Waardenburg syndrome

so I would be interested in writing a piece on
independant living programs for the mentally ill
in the U.S.A. This is a timely issue, as we have
hundreds of thousands of mentally ill people
living homeless on the streets of America. We
need more programs which would get them off of

I wholeheartedly support any campaign which
enables the disabled housebound person to reap
the benefits of computer technology and the
Internet. Before acquiring a computer from a
charitable source 10 years ago my only form of
activity relied upon the intervention of a
carer. To be honest, I felt as though I was
going out of my mind with boredom as prior to
the deterioration of my disease which left me
virtually paralysed from the neck down my hobbies
 and pastimes were innumerable.
Since owning the computer my life has reached a
whole new dimension and only someone who has been
in this situation can appreciate how ones quality
of life can improve with the ability to control
your own activities. From simply being able to
write a letter, keep an address book to more
satisfying pastimes such as designing calendars,
 creating photograph albums, reading, obtaining
information about new equipment on the Internet
 etc the list is endless.
Because of a disturbed sleep pattern I spend
about 16 hours each day on the computer and
particularly value being able to read books
directly off the screen. During the winter when
I am housebound for approximately six to 8 months
the benefits of this technology enriches my life
 considerably.
However I live in constant fear that the computer
will break down and I struggle desperately to
maintain and purchase items such as printer
cartridges. I would be devastated if I couldn't
use my computer for whatever reason and even
short periods without its many benefits leaves me
 frustrated and bored.
Similarly, although I could list thousands of
benefits which the Internet brings to my life it
takes very careful budgeting and monitoring to
 afford the charges.
In conclusion I support any efforts made which
will enable the housebound to enrich their lives
with computer technology and the Internet and
sincerely hope that the campaign gets the support
 it deserves.

her husband who has a felonious history with guns

Thanks for the invite to visit your web site. As

I found your site via another one [Ability net]
and am really delighted. Congratulations on
such a lovely design with the Spring flowers,
and the rippling colours, just like the aurora
borealis which we see here sometimes out in the
west. I will 'call' again, and perhaps even
contribute to the magazine. I am Secretary of
Islay and Jura 'People First' disAbility Forum. I
am disabled myself and caring for husband who
has Alzheimer's disease. Thank for such an
 enjoyable experience. Annette Sinclair

I have been in pain for 4 years, does it get me
down? yes, have I done anything about it? yes, I
have become a positive person, looking towards
the future and not looking at the past. I have
found this is the only way to be. I use to be
very sporty, I loved to get on my push bike and
cycle for miles. I had a good job which I
enjoyed. Of course all that has now finished,
but being positive about life I have now found a
new life with my computer and have now started
building web sites. My last one being about the
town where I live which is Ripon, North
Yorkshire, England. The address for my site
 is... http://www.shopinripon.homestead.com
The reason why I am telling you this is that
being disabled does not mean you have to sit at
home feeling sorry for yourself like I did for
the first year of becoming disabled. On my site
there is a logo called homestead, click on that
and you too can build a site all of your own and
the best thing about it is it is FREE. I am so
glad I found it because it has changed my outlook
on life. I now have something to look forward to.
 God bless to you all.
